Despite the fact that both shows are about young guys whose lives are flipped upside down when it is found that the superheroes they once admired are twisted and wicked, Amazon allegedly treats Invincible and The Boys extremely differently.
According to Executive Producer Marge Dean, Invincible mostly survived through word of mouth rather than Amazon marketing. In an interview with Deadline, she stated:
“I love Amazon; they’re fantastic, but there was almost no marketing for this show.” This thing just appeared out of nowhere, and I had no idea what it was or what was going to happen.”
Dean hopes that this will change, and that Amazon and other companies would value adult animation like Invincible. She feels that adult animation may achieve the status of high-quality cinema and television, citing the works of Wes Anderson, Guillermo del Toro, and others.
“Themes, issues, and ideas that build into a story in a way that people can actually hear are at the heart of adult animation.” The balance between action and profound emotional human experience is critical.”
