Barry Keoghan Reveals He Auditioned For The Riddler In “The Batman”

The BatmanBarry Keoghan, the Irish actor who played the Joker in a deleted sequence from “The Batman,” has claimed that he was originally cast as the Riddler.

Keoghan recently told Esquire magazine that he spent only $10 on a self-tape audition for the Riddler. He disguised up like a character from Stanley Kubrick’s “A Clockwork Orange,” and recorded himself creepily exiting an elevator and going down a corridor.

Although Keoghan was not cast as the Riddler (the role eventually went to Paul Dano), his audition tape impressed director Matt Reeves enough that he was cast as the Joker.

"I just made it up," Keoghan told Esquire about his audition video. "I wanted to make it Kubrick-y: symmetrical, the X on the back, the square doorframe, everything square. I just wanted swag to come across. Swag and endearing. It was just me giving my idea. And then I's like, I'ma send this in!"

It’s fun to imagine what Keoghan would have done in the position of the Riddler. His audition video hints that he would have given the character a distinct and disturbing spin.

It’s also difficult to envision anyone else playing the Joker in Reeves’ dark and brutal Batman flick. Keoghan’s performance was genuinely remarkable, leaving admirers yearning for more.

Overall, it’s great to hear that Keoghan was involved in “The Batman,” even if it wasn’t in the role he originally wanted. He’s a talented actor with a lot to offer, and I’m excited to see what he does next.
